Features of optical loss test sets

There are many different sets available for rental or lease on the market. When you choose your set, you need to understand all of the different features and functions it offers to make sure it will work well with your network and system. Consider the fiber optic connectors as well, to be sure the set you are considering will attach to the fibers properly.

How optical loss test sets work

Optical loss test sets are simple to use. The technician will connect the light source to one end of an optical fiber. They will then connect a power meter at the other end. Then, they send a signal through the fiber. The meter will measure the difference between the intensity of the light signal as it was sent and the result that came through the other end of the fiber. The difference is called the optical loss. This determines the performance of the fiber and can let the tech know where the issues are within their system and whether some cable needs to be replaced.

Even though there are different types of optical fibers, such as single and multiple modes, most of the OLTS will work for any situation.

Optical Loss Test Set Manufacturers

Many different companies are making optical loss test sets today. Some of the most popular companies include Fluke, Agilent, EXFP, Noyes, and JDSU. These are trusted names in the field and offer high quality equipment.
