The S-Series - setting new standards in HDD drilling - the TJ 5415 S2
Swiss manufacturer TERRA AG has unveiled its S-Series Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) range, setting new standards in HDD machinery. The TERRA-JET 5415 S2 may drill directional bores up to 250 m (825 ft) length and 520 mm (20.5") diameter (depending on ground conditions). It is driven by a 97 kW (132 HP) powered diesel engine, which is “clean” and fulfils the required “green” emission regulations for some years to come. Torque and pullback force are produced by separated hydraulic circuits allowing the maximum torque of 5'400 Nm and the maximum pullback force of 150 kN (15 tons) to be used simultaneously under full load. A rarity nowadays in HDD machines! The drilling fluid volume is 400 ltr/min at a maximum fluid pressure of 19 bars. The external mixing system mixes the Bentonite into the drilling fluid via an injector (venture hopper). The TERRA-JET 5415 S2 is compact and manoeuvrable in spite of its high power output and superior operating capabilities. It is only 2.25 m wide and 6.6 m long which allows operation in confined city spaces. It can be easily transported with an operational weight of 9.2 tonnes. Service friendly The S-Series is designed to be extremely service friendly and reliable. All hydraulic components are easily accessible for servicing. The engine cover is made of glass fibre reinforced plastic (GRP) and can be lifted up to 45°, supported by gas-filled struts. They can also be lifted off completely allowing the best access to all components. The electric components are assembled in the central control panel inside of the cabin with easy access. The Driver's Cabine The driver’s cab has large windows all around and offers enough space also for tall operators. The clear sight on the drill ramp as well as the intelligent drilling assistant systems make it very user friendly and easy for operators. The operator’s seat is height adjustable and has an adjustable back rest. The cab is equipped with an air circulation and heater. The cab also has an air condition on board with a high cooling capacity. The walls are covered with carpet covering. At the front and right side it are equipped with large wipers. Ergonomic operator's station The drill operator drives and operates the HDD machine using the two multifunctional joysticks installed in the left and right armrests of the operator’s seat. Driving using the joysticks allows instantaneous control and smooth movement of the TERRA-JET. A large touch screen with on-board computer can optionally be installed in the driver’s cabin (right picture). The monitor displays all vital information needed at any instance, and is controlled by finger touch on the screen. The on-board computer updates and saves all relevant machine data every two seconds updating the operator on the essential drilling elements. This data may be transferred to a laptop for later evaluation and provides essential data for efficient service diagnostics. Additionally a bore log can be printed for each bore as regulated in the German specification DVGW 321. The bore log shows the torque, the drilling forces, the drilling fluid volume and pressure for each metre of the pilot bore and backreaming undertaken.. Drilling assistant systems Intelligent drilling assistant systems like the thrust mode, carve mode, the ADBSe or the drill speed control make the drilling more efficient and more easy. The operator can relax, the machine does the work. The electronical CLP control manages all drilling assistant systems and feels the underground.
