Washers / Disinfector Description

There are several brands of washers and disinfectors that help to clean surgical instruments after an invasive procedure has been performed. Typically, the cleaning devices will come with professional-grade sterilization capabilities as well as a way to wash and dry the tools. Washers and disinfectors come in a variety of shapes and sizes, which are perfect for adjusting to the size of a dental office.

Features of washers / disinfectors

Washers and disinfectors come with some key features, including the ability to monitor and document the type of cleaning that is done to each instrument. The surgical instruments that can be cleaned by washers/disinfectors include:
  • Devices with narrow lumens
  • Rigid endoscopes
  • Laparoscopic instruments
  • Scissors
  • Retractors
  • Forceps
These devices can rinse, drain, and perform a variety of custom programs to ensure the instruments are properly cleaned and their care reported. Most washers/disinfectors are constructed of stainless steel or another strong metal. The control panel comes with several different programs and displays. They typically weigh between 100 and 200 pounds and can be turned on and off with ease.

How washers / disinfectors work

Washers and disinfectors use a variety of computerized programs to run the cleaning process. Typically, these devices can be adjusted for temperature, duration, program signals, washing type, and more. There are plenty of customizable programs as well, with the ability to rinse and drain the instruments in a way that works best for the dental office. It will process all documentation and create an electronic record of all the surgical instruments that were washed.

About washers / disinfectors

The cleaning technology installed in these relatively new devices helps to maintain the best forms of sanitation that comply with all dental policies. A dentist’s office should be sterile at all times, and these machines help to disinfect tools, which often become bloody and contaminated after a surgical procedure. The technology equipped on washers and disinfectors include:
  • Circulation pumps
  • Wash cabinets
  • Dispensing systems
  • Detergent units
  • Dispenser connections
  • Freshwater hygiene systems
  • Two or more spray arms for cleaning
  • Spray nozzles
  • Injector system for hollow instruments
  • Drainage features
  • Electrical connections, which are also convertible
Washers/disinfectors work to disinfect visible as well as invisible debris. If these particles are not properly removed, it could result in contamination. Per dental policies and procedures, a proper washer/disinfector is almost a requirement for the functioning of the dental office.
